The NHS Cervical Screening Programme is introducing new digital ways to communicate with patients. These changes are designed to make it quicker and easier for you to receive your screening invitations and results.
What’s changing?
From 24 March 2026, cervical screening messages (including results and invitations) will be sent first through the NHS App if you have it downloaded.
Here’s how it works:
You’ll receive a notification in the NHS App
If notifications are off, you may also get a text reminder to check the app
If the message isn’t opened within a few days, or you don’t use the app, a letter will be posted to you
How will I get my results?
If you use the NHS App: results will usually appear there within 2–3 weeks
If you don’t use the app: you’ll receive your results by post
Do I still need to do anything differently?
No – booking your cervical screening appointment stays the same. You will still:
Contact your GP practice, or
Use your local sexual health service
Why is the NHS making this change?
Digital communication helps to:
Deliver results faster
Improve accuracy and reduce lost letters
Give you more flexible access to your information
Save NHS resources for patient care
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I still get a letter?
Yes. If you don’t read your NHS App message, or don’t use the app, a letter will still be sent.
Is the NHS App free?
Yes, the NHS App is free to download and use.
What if I get more than one invitation?
Some GP practices also send their own reminders. If you’ve already booked your appointment, you don’t need to take any further action.

Not yet. You’ll still need to book in the usual way via your GP or sexual health service.
